Color Me Beautiful: Opinions Wanted!

Meet Jorge, my awesome hairdresser. I have talked about him to so many people, so I thought you might like to see pictures! I have gone to see him at Lupita's Beauty Salon in Springdale off and on for about 10 years. He really understands the science and art of hair. Plus, it's an opportunity for me to speak Spanish. These photos are from when I took KJ to get her hair done. Since then, my sister Bria and my other niece Hannah also went, and my mom has plans too!

All this talk about hair/beauty brings me to the next part of my post. Let's say you are a 31 year old woman, who doesn't get the sleep you would like and has carried, birthed and is raising four children. So, yeah, I'm trying to make the most of what I've got.

Good thing I have such long arms and can disguise the fact that I am the photographer of these "candid" and natural scenes between mother and child. :)

What I'm trying to say is at a thrift store recently I picked up an old copy of Color Me Beautiful by Carole Thompson.  I remembered my mom had one back in the 80's and told me the concept of it: based on their complexion's undertones, eye and hair color, each person looks best in a certain set of colors. This book uses Winter, Summer, Spring, and Autumn to refer to the color palettes. Anyone can wear almost any color family; it's the shade that makes the difference. For example, I'm a Winter and look my best in "clear, vivid, or icy colors with blue undertones." The book has description of all four seasons and how to figure out what you are, makeup tips, and even how to shop and get your closet in order. I'm sure my friends around here are giggling, because I've mentioned this book to them and then I try to figure out their season. (Don't worry, I am not trying to make money off this.) I just feel like the principles in it can help me look my best. Has anyone else heard of this? What season are you? Please leave a comment!

I'm so happy to finally 'meet' Jorge! I wish I had had a chance to go to him with you. Also, I think you are beautiful. and I think I'm a spring? I'm not sure, but I do think I look good in turquoise colors.

I think I'm a fall? Maybe a winter? With my dark eyes and hair, I tend to look best in red hues. Deep greens also go well.

I remember when this was a huge topic in the 80's . . . and I used to know what season I was.

I'm a winter, too. I don't really own any purple, but every time I wear purple, Allen tells me how good I look . . . so maybe that's a good suggestion???

You look great, btw.

I didn't realize I was dating myself back to the 80s--but my family uses this terminology all the time. I'm a spring and tend to look good in warm colors and/or pastels. Good luck! I think you have beautiful coloring. I've always wanted natural really dark hair.

Hi! I'm Katie's sister and I randomly clicked on a link from her blog to yours. You seem like such a fun person! I've been obsessed with "colorlizing" as you call it for a long time, dating back to when one of my friends went to a color me beautiful session with her mom and came back with a little check book full of fabric swatches and clothing suggestions. I've read Carol's boom over and over (picked it up at Good Will) But I've found a couple of other places that I feel are more accurate/give more thorough advice
Pretty Your World: http://www.prettyyourworld.com/colortheory.html

is like the seasons but more categories, and she has an online quiz to help you find yours. I am not just a Spring, I am a CLEAR SPRING. that helped me, because using Carol's system I kept trying to wear brown, and brown is too muddy for clear springs. It also explains why I look good in black even though I'm a spring. Clear springs can wear black.

What I have liked even more, however, is a new place I found called Dressing Your Truth. This woman says we all have a natural "Energy" and you need to dress true to your energy to look and feel your best. I have read 2 of her books and I think I've found the system that will help me the most. I am saving up to buy it :)
Interestingly, her name is also Carol. http://dressingyourtruth.com/

Katie's sister: I LOVE it that you are so into this! I checked out those links. I'm gonna have to re-read that first one a few times because I'm so programed into the 4 season thing. Do you have a blog?
